Tooth-to-Tail Ratio

This phrase derives from the military, meant to convey the proportion of actual fighting equipment / weaponry to organizational, administrative, and supply-chain elements.

It is good to have a high tooth-to-tail ratio in business as well.

What is the amount of organizational overburden that your organization is carrying?

As organizations grow, it is a truth written in stone that the proportion of tooth-to-tail goes down because the need to control and manage goes up.  Management always places an organizational burden on the “teeth” of an organization.

Keeping your organization lean is a constant battle, yet a battle that must be won.
